Memoirs of a Chaplain

Chaplain Bob's Testimony:

I was saved in 1960 and later baptized in Whitmore Lake.

A few years later I found myself in Vietnam at the beginning of the conflict. I was stationed at Cam Rahn Bay. Three weeks after I returned to the USA the air base near where I was stationed was totally demolished by the enemy. I thank God for the mercy and protection He gave me during my tour of duty.

After returning stateside, I knew the Lord was calling me to some area of full-time service for Him. I served as an interim pastor and preached whenever the Lord opened the doors. During this time I went to a prison camp and held weekly services. I believed this is where the Lord wanted me, however, I enjoyed my secular job as a meat cutter so much, I did not want to give it up!

God had other plans for my life. He called me into the jail and prison ministry in a rather memorable way. I was involved in a very serious car accident that nearly took my life. Like Jacob, who wrestled with God at the brook Jabbok, I would never walk the same physically or spiritually again. God got my attention. It was then that He called me into the prison ministry, and I answered the call.

For over twenty-five years one of the greatest joys of my life has been to take the Word of God and love of Jesus to the inmates.

Madeline's Testimony:

Hi! My name is Madeline (Steward) Howard. Chaplain Bob and I have married for nearly forty-six years.

I accepted Christ as my Savior when I was sixteen years old. It happened at a Sunday Evening Service at a little country church in Whitmore Lake, Michigan. I vividly remember Pastor Tom Gratton and his wife, Nancy, taking me to a back room in the church. There they opened the Bible and showed me I was a sinner and needed Jesus as my Savior. I asked the Lord to forgive me my sins and be my Savior. Praise the Lord! I remember it as if it were yesterday. Bob and I were baptized together later that year in Whitmore Lake.

A number of years later, I dedicated my life to full-time service for the Lord. A verse that spoke to me in a very special way was Daniel 1:8a "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself . . . ." At that time, I made the same determination in my heart.

Bob and I lived in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I was serving the Lord in many areas of our local church. God burdened my heart for the lost and the need to reach them for Jesus. This burden increased to the point, that I went forward at a Sunday Service and asked the Lord to give some of this overwhelming desire to my husband. It wasn't long after this that the Lord answered my prayer.

It has been a great blessing for me to serve the Lord with my husband throughout our marriage.

MY life verse is Philippians 1:21: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."
