The Apostle Peter (1:1). Peter was a man of three names: (1) Simon was his given name (2)Peter ["a stone'"] was the name Jesus gave him and (3) Cephas, which was the Aramaic equivalent of "Peter"

The Readers: (1:1)

Christians scattered throughout a region that is present day modern Turkey. They were facing great trials and persecution for their faith in Jesus.

The Theme: (5:10)

Suffering, Grace and Glory. In this life all believers will experience a multitude of trials. It is by God's grace we are able to stand (5:12) and by faith in His Word we have hope (a confident expectation) that all of this will lead to glory someday.

The Purpose: (5:12)

To encourage believers in the midst of trials and suffering. Peter is the apostle of hope.
